The High Billing Recruiter VS The Successful Recruiter

In the recruiting industry recruiters are put into two category’s which sound strikingly similar in terms of how each is perceived but in the final analysis are radically different from each other. In this article I will try to help you differentiate between the two while illustrating the common denominators that run through both of the above. At the end, I will leave it to the client and candidate to decide which of the two (if not both in conjunction with each other best fits their needs.

The High Billing Recruiter: Just as the title infers, the high billing recruiter consistently “bills out” several thousand dollars in fees each and every month. He rarely fails to achieve his “number.” By combining experience, high work ethic, tenacity with an ego (in many cases) that causes him not to accept anything less than a high six figure income with all the trappings that come with it he will do whatever it takes and use any and all recruiting practices to make his numbers. It is for that “number” that he lives. Do his superior billings make him a great recruiter? In all too many cases, (to be fair in not all cases) the answer is no. For what may be lacking is genuine sense of caring about his clients, candidates or the industry in general. He runs a higher risk of running afoul in numerous ways which can ultimately destroy his chances of keeping his earnings.

The Successful Recruiter: Success in a profit driven environment is often judged by the amount of money made. In the case of the successful recruiter earnings are no less important to him as is his high billing counterpart. However, it is love for the industry coupled with his desire to “do the right thing” for all those he works with is what sets him apart. The successful recruiter builds strong mutually beneficial partnerships with as many people as possible. From that he develops repeat and referral business that give him a consistent income stream. For his commitment to ethics he is respected and trusted by his peers which also results in a very nice lifestyle with every chance of continued success.

Is the successful recruiter a better recruiter than the high billing recruiter? Is the high billing recruiter a better recruiter than the successful recruiter? It is conceivable that the high billing recruiter can also be the successful recruiter as with the other way around. The problem in the Recruiting/Staffing Industry is that all too often the Executive Search Firms (aka Staffing Agency) put an extraordinary premium on billings to the point that “green” recruiters are put under such intense pressure to meet their monthly billing quota they develop bad habits. A high billing recruiter and a successful recruiter can be one and the same. It’s a matter of how they do what they do and the respect that is shown to the industry.

Closing Argument: The temptation will always be to work with those who have achieved a high level of success as evidenced by the amount of money they have made, the car they drive, or the size of their house. That is the prevailing attitude in this country. The lesson we have been forced to learn, given our recent deep recession, is how success should really be viewed and that one in conjunction with the other leads to the best of both worlds. From my standpoint as a high billing/successful recruiter the only way to go is the right way to go. Only you can decide what the right way is. Mull your decision carefully as there is so much riding on it.
